While I know it's nothing to brag about, Excel Saga is one of the only manga I find worth buying at all. In light of, you know, the sheer accessibility of fan-translated manga. Though that I might soon make an exception for Jojo's Bizarre Adventure when Viz starts nearing the end of its current storyline.
But let's not go off onto any tangents.

You know, being the urban kid I am, my first reaction to the news of the value of Volumes 7 and 8 was jokingly this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CL4Y0a4fXbkBut seriously, that's messed up. I know that anyone who would be interested in reading this series would be ever so pissed if they had to fork over $40-80+ just to read one freaking volume. Viz really needs to get the ball rolling on those reprints. It's also a shame that this series seems like it only has a small number of readers I currently only know one other person that reads excel-saga. Two if I count other person I know, but he gave up on it recently after vol. 18 because of his school activities and his loss of interest in the series due to him reading an excessive amount of shonen

I recently went into New York City, and on 1073 6th Ave. (that's Avenue of the Americas for you non-natives) I found an awesome bookstore called Kinokuniya.
They had LOTS and LOTS of manga, and animé, and other Japanese books (all in both English and Japanese), and they had every volume of Excel Saga-EXCEPT 7 and 8. Not even this huge-ass specialty store in the heart of New York freaking-City had it! Granted, I already own them, but I was really hoping they would be there, so I could at least offer them to someone here...

There's still an issue of 8 on the shelf at the local store here, but 8 has been long gone. Shocking that a specialty store in NYC lacked either though, very strange.

I don't frequent the chan boards much but I found something on /c/ last evening which didn't surprise me much - Found a thread with english scans of Excel Saga Vol.7.
THIS is what it's come to. -_-
Supply and demand, Viz Media. Supply and demand. Just saying.

Well... Most popular things are crap. Not only in Manga-matters, more generally like. For proof, turn on the TV. (if you possess such a rude object)
Beside, it's my understanding that comics generally are quite unpopular outside of countries like Japan, America or France. Well for me, I know only one dude who actually reads them. But he wouldn't touch Excel Saga, even when I wave it in a quite unsubtle fashion around before his face. (not to be taken literally) Partly because there is no german translation.
But leaving aside all that. Excel Saga is very... unique, you will agree. Therefore it will attract quite an unique audience. I guess it's fine if some people still have it in mind, and remember smiling, even years after it's all over. Best thing that could happen would be, if those creative and talented readers among us put some of Rikdo-sans ideas in there own future work.
Well, yeah. And after all, as long as the naruto-kiddies sponsor the fun for us... who cares about mere sale-numbers? Right!?

Our high school librarian was asked by our anime club to carry "Excel Saga" in our huge anime/manga section. We all sat down, looked at a few issues again and decided that having people losing jobs over the series was not worth it. We have lots of books but "Excel" is just too Excelly to have any parents freaking out about it.
It still has a core fanbase from kids watching and sharing the anime and then looking for the books. I agree that it really could stand to have a repeat. cheers galenow

*The registration confirmation e-mail said I needed to wait for my request to be reviewed and replied to before I could use my account. It seems that was not the case.* So here I am, new recruit to the forum after finally spotting a mention of the website in the manga, having followed it for 5, soon to be six, years. My story of coming into contact with ES is like most others'; I happened upon an ad. for the anime on an "annie-may" DVD (I wonder if it wasn't Gundam Wing?) I'd bought, and after watching it and finding it very amusing, I eventually gave the manga a try. The further I read, the more I realized how infinitely much more awesome it was/is, and I've been a dedicated follower ever since. Excel Saga and Berserk share the #1 spot on my favourite manga list (odd combination, I know, but I have a broad taste). On topic, the single person I know who reads ES, is a japanese otaku friend of mine I met on XBOX Live, of all places (I wrote to him and whined about how sucky europe is for not getting any cool japanese games). As Carl wrote earlier, my friend confirmed that Excel Saga is minor and generally "unbeknownst" among the ignorant masses in japan as well. As for my tries to get others to realize how awesome the manga is, I've struck zero, as you may have guessed. While none of my real life friends read manga, none of my online otaku friends have been interested in giving it a try either, despite my rather, "vigorous" attempt to get the word out... http://www.anime-source.com/banzai/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=19018&highlight=excel+saga*Never mind the broken {IMG} links, dunno why it does that... You can cut off the code and copy paste them into your browser if you want to see the pictures, but they're just scans I took of Nishiki and some funny moments* In any case, as you can see, I only got 4 replies by 3 people, despite my (ranting) promotion of both that particular post and the manga in general... I'd go with the good old "Pff! Their loss!", if I didn't want someone to discuss the manga with so bad lol...

@ Uncreativity Yeah, I just thought it was funny because of the contrast to her actual character in the manga. ^^

Yo, and welcome.
I, for one, have a friend who's read mango, watches animu, and yet has so much fucking life, that it's just scary. Even so, I managed to convince him to read the volumes I have. He was against it at first (because he had bad memories of the anime), but then he finally got around to it, and loved it. Now, just like me... he's waiting for me to get THOSE DAMN VOLUMES 20 and 21. It will be soon, tough. Since Empik seems to have my order almost finished... I think.

@ Kharaxel Hmm~ I think what makes me a major otaku (or major fail?), is that the time I take for those very interests are what I consider having a life (lol). How come you have a hard time getting #20 & #21 though? "Geographical" issues? As for myself, I'm quite lucky. Even though sweden is such a minor country, there's a strong enough otaku culture to warrant specialty shops here and there. That aside, the colors on my sig. look a bit off for some reason...
